WHEN IS A 'GIRL' NOT A 'GIRL'?
Policy Watch SA questions the motives underpinning a popular AI text-to-image community art platform's dedication of an entire website browsing page to 'girl' (the platform also has separate 'woman' and 'female' browsing pages)
*Disclaimer: By providing examples of the way women are portrayed by AI text-to-image art generators and on community platforms providing access to the software, Policy Watch SA is simply drawing attention to apparently widespread concerns about the underpinning issues explored here. This should not be misinterpreted as condemnation of a specific software model, community platform or their users/members.
In the art world, nude portrayals of the female body tend to be associated with fine art. By contrast, semi-nude portrayals of the female body are "more commonly found in commercial contexts and ... used to evoke desire and allure" (ThisVsThat). "Both forms of representation have had a significant impact on art and popular culture, sparking debates about beauty standards, objectification, and the role of women in society".

users tag their images #girl so that they'll appear on the 'girl' page

NSFW means content not safe/suitable for viewing in a public, formal, or controlled environment such as a workplace, school or family setting. Many workplaces and schools have policies prohibiting access to sexual and graphic subject matter (Wikipedia)

However, in some countries the terms 'girl' and 'woman' tend to be used interchangeably, with 'girl' implying a sexually attractive young woman. This may be offensive to some women, as well as worrying for the parents or guardians of adolescent girls.
In that context, rarely does AI-text-to-imaging portray a 'girl' or woman in loose clothing with a modest neckline – while seductive facial expressions tend to be the norm.
Each of the images below was tagged with the words 'girl' and 'woman'. Most include a relatively low-cut neckline, two portray females with shapely legs – and the facial expressions on at least three are seductive. When first published on a popular international AI text-to-image art generating platform, not one was labelled 'NSFW'. Perhaps the presence of a cat and an ice-cream sundae make one image 'safe'? Maybe a Pacific or Caribbean island beach setting implies wholesomeness? Whatever the case, these are not 'girls'.

Women have "mixed feelings" about AI images, with many expressing significant concerns about safety, bias, and the reinforcement of "unrealistic beauty standards"/"unattainable body types". Key concerns include the prevalence of AI-generated images that are sexually explicit (these perspectives were taken from a Google AI overview of the results of a search for material reflecting how women feel about the way they are portrayed in AI-generated images)

Below are examples of the type of female images often featured in the 'fantasy' page of a popular AI art generating platform. Once again, when first published not one of these had been labelled 'NSFW' despite portraying women with exaggerated body parts – in breach of the platform's community standards.

We have chosen not to include AI text-to-image 'full artistic nudity' in these examples, although the platform from which all the images on this page were taken does allow it. The only restrictions seem to be that 'full artistic nudity' should not portray children under the age of 16 or real, non-fictional people.
This despite widespread concerns clearly articulated in myriad Internet articles that "AI-generated nude images have a profound impact on societal norms, often reinforcing existing stereotypes and biases."

Importantly, how does the creator of an AI image portraying a nude woman or 'girl' distinguish between one that is over and one that is under the age of 16?
The fear is that using AI to create these images could lead to "a normalisation of hypersexualised portrayals of women, affecting public perception and behaviour towards gender roles" (taken from a website unfortunately also graphically advertising a 'nudifying' app*).
